What Should You Look Out For When Getting Teen Auto Insurance

There are many things you should think about when you are
purchasing teen auto insurance.  Many
things you should think about are paying annually, the type of car your teen is
driving, adding a named driver, and more.

There are many things you should think about when you are
purchasing teen auto insurance.  Many
things you should think about are paying annually, the type of car your teen is
driving, adding a named driver, and more.

Finding cheap auto insurance can be difficult.  So your teenager finally got their driver’s
license and you now need to find them good insurance.  There is a Pass Plus exam that is offered
right now.  The Pass Plus is an intensive
driver’s training course that is aimed at teens and new drivers becoming better
drivers.  When a teenager passes this
exam you will automatically receive a 35% discount on your auto insurance.  This is a big deal because teenagers are very
expensive to put on your insurance.

The car your teenager drives will make a big difference to
what your premiums are for them also.
You can find the lists on the Internet which cars are the most expensive
to insure and which cars are the cheapest to insure.  If the car is not on the highest stolen list
then it will be cheaper to insure for your teen.  The theory is that the cheaper the car is
then the cheaper the teen auto insurance will be.

Although you are looking for cheap auto insurance you also
need to realize you must have the appropriate coverage for your child.  Statistics show that teenagers have more
accidents than adults because they have less experience driving.  This is a proven fact.  If your child is in an accident you should be
sure that your insurance will cover the damages your teen may have done to the
other vehicle.  You don’t want to have an
insurance claim that you cannot afford to pay and your insurance didn’t
cover.  Be sure of all of the coverage
you have opted for your child.  Don’t be
looking for only the cheapest because this might put you in a bad position.

If you have a teenage daughter then you are in a little bit
of luck.  It is proven that girls and
women get in less accidents then teenage boys and men.  Because of this statistic, females are
cheaper to insure.  HoweverArticle Submission, just because
of the gender doesn’t mean that the insurance will remain at a low rate

Maintaining a low auto insurance rate for your teenager also
means that they are driving without being pulled over for traffic
violations.  The first ticket is usually
a freebie and your teenager will be sent to defensive driving school.  That is of course if the violation is
something simple like speeding.  Your
rates will begin to drop every six months as your child drives without any
tickets on their license.  If your
teenager begins to get tickets and pulled over then your insurance rates will
begin to increase and you may not be able to afford to insure them.

When you are looking for cheap auto insurance for your
teenager you need to think about many things.
Consider the type of car your teenager will be driving and be sure your
teenager is driving responsibly not getting pulled over.

Parents That Support Teen Drinking

As an adult you know you did plenty of stupid things when you were a teen. Maybe that’s why teen drinking is a growing problem. Maybe our guilt as parents prevents us from being too strict about teenage drinking. To add fuel to the fire, hundreds of times a day our children see and hear TV, radio and Internet messages that support and/or glamorize getting drunk. On TV when someone gets a raise they have a drink. When they finalize their divorce they have a drink. When they feel depressed they have a drink. When they need a few laughs they have a drink.

It’s an uphill battle for parents that want their kids to avoid the downsides of alcohol abuse. But what the heck you say, it’s just a “Right of passage.” If you rationalize letting teens drink at your house because “At least they’re not driving” then you’re asking for more trouble than you can imagine. Teenage drinking is at epidemic levels and getting worse. Not just for teens that drink but for the parents that don’t consider it a big deal.

Social host liability laws are now nationwide and the adults that let illegal teen drinking occur are going to make for some painful situations for their teens and their family.

Furthermore, the adults don’t have to be home to be held liable. Every city may have its own set of social host laws. Regardless, nationwide, social host laws will hold adults accountable for teens drinking. Jail time, fines, community service, and plenty of embarrassment are a few of the consequences but the real consequence comes when there is some accident or assault that occurs. The consequences of that last one go on forever.

The fact is this. All states now have zero tolerance laws. That means if you are under the age of 21 and you get behind the wheel of a car you are breaking the law if there is any level of booze in your body. No exceptions. That means one drink, two, or three. Hard liquor or wine. It seems that if that officer smells a bottle cap’s worth of moonshine on your breath that teen is going to be wearing silver bracelets right there.”

If you’re the kind of parent that likes to tie one on once in a while and don’t see any harm in letting young adults experience the joys of booze then you need a little reality check. Teenager are getting killed far too often after a few drinks and a little time behind the wheel. But our teenagers don’t necessarily suffer the consequences of poor choices all by themselves. Unfortunately, they usually take a few more victims with them. This isn’t moral preaching here, this is fact.

Let your teenagers drink and the likelihood of someone or something getting hurt goes way up. Could be a drunk-driving incident, could be alcohol abuse, could be sexual assault, and the list of wonderful side effects of being a little over-permissive go on and on.

Do yourself a favor and check your local laws about social hosting (providing the place for underage drinking and/or the alcohol) and make sure you and your children’s friend’s parents are aware of their legal and moral responsibility. Here are a few things you can do as a parent when your child is going to someone else’s house for a party or just a little hang time.

1. ASK YOUR KIDS QUESTIONS. Who is going to be there? Where are the parents? Is this a boy/girl situation? What’s the occasion? Will there be drinking or drugging there? (That last one is a bit blunt but it’s a good idea to teach your kids how to be direct and blunt too!)

2. CALL THE OTHER PARENTS. Yeah, you’re going to be appreciated and rejected at the same time. Other parents may not appreciate the fact that you would question them about this while other parents will be very appreciative of your inquiry.

3. SAY NO. If you have any suspicions that something is amiss, it probably is. If you don’t get the answer you wanted to hear out of your teenager or the parents you’re quizzing, then it’s time to muster up your adult courage and say “Nope! This isn’t happening tonight, we’ve got to find some options!” Then, find an alternative and sponsor it yourself. “You can’t go to the party but I’ll be glad to give you and three of your friends tickets to the movies, bowling, roller skating, etc.” Offer to make a big batch of their favorite snacks and rent a few movies at your house. Get creative but get real. Saying “no” doesn’t get any easier as your teenager becomes more and more independent.

When your kids accuse you of not trusting them, let them know it is not a matter of trust when it comes to the power of drugs and alcohol, it’s a matter of facts. People do stupid things under the influence and as a parent you know the facts.

Even though you may trust your child, you cannot trust people you don’t know or the persuasive power of “group think” when there’s other influences like peer pressure and booze pressure. By the way, parents also face an awful lot of peer pressure. They want to be “cool parents” for their kids and they don’t want to be the “prudes” down the street.

4. SAY YES. If you are comfortable that things are safe then go ahead and give your blessings. And, let your child know there are times when she has to call you and check in regardless of what the event is. Good times to check in are when they arrive, just before they leave to come home, just before bedtime (if a sleepover), etc.

If for some reason they forget to call you (and they will) then teach them that this is not acceptable and YOU pick up the phone and dial them. If they don’t answer their cell phone you might be a little suspicious. It’s a good idea to just make it a very simple rule. When your teen is away from home and you call, they better answer the phone. Of course, if your teen is in a movie theater and can’t pick up the phone or dial you they can call back when it’s over. If your kids get a little paranoid that you’re checking up on them then that’s not a bad thing.

Keep talking to other parents and make sure you let those who call you know how much you appreciate their concern. Make a pact with other parents whenever you can to check in with each other and compare notes.

5. PREPARE FOR SCREW UPS. If your teenage blows it and makes a mistake it’s important to have a plan. If he gets behind the wheel of a car and he’s afraid to call you or a cab then everyone is in real danger. Start repeating this over and over to your teen. No matter when, where, or under what circumstances it happens, if you make a mistake and get into a situation where there are drugs or drinking, your parents will always come and get you anytimeFeature Articles, anywhere with no questions asked.

If your teen is in a predicament where there is drinking taking place and she needs a way to extricate herself then give her a private code between the two of you that she can use when she calls home. She can call you and pretend to have an argument about why she should not come home. That way she can save face with her friends and maybe her life. Say this over and over because it could save some serious heartache.

If you make a habit of asking questions of your kids and their friend’s parents your kids may begin to wonder if you have eyes in the back of your head. They may be surprised to find out that you heard about so-and-so getting into trouble at the last party because your kids certainly weren’t going to share that with you. Being in-the-know is good for you and good for your kids.

Never forget – it is your job as a parent to protect your teens as long as you can. Keeping them away from alcohol until they are able to make adult-like decisions will work to everyone’s advantage. Studies have proven that the longer your child avoids alcohol and drugs the better chance they have of living a life free of its many painful consequences.

Parents of Teen Drivers

So, what does a parent think while sitting in the passenger seat and their teen is driving with a permit license? A “bump” in the parking lot with another car? Traffic tickets for moving violations? Insurance rates sky-rocketing?

If you visit search engines you can find several resources to assist you on this subject. Try searching on the phrase “parents with teen drivers”. Alternatively we have tried to make this easy for you if you visit our news page on this very topic.

The Tragedy of Teen Driving Accidents: What Can Parents Do?

”;

The teen years are supposed to be about fun and possibilities: graduating high school, choosing a college, dating, rebelling against parents a little… all in preparation for grown-up life. Unfortunately, 6,000 teens a year don’t get to experience grown-up life because they die in car accidents. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC), car wrecks are the leading cause of death for teenagers between the fifteen and nineteen. The death of a teen is a tragedy. In 2009, 29,485 Florida car crashes involved teenagers. More than 19,000 teens were injured and 153 died. The car crash rate for teens is the highest among all drivers. Why are car crashes so deadly for teens? There are several reasons: Inexperience: Teens lack the experience to make good driving decisions and to react in dangerous or unexpected situations.Bravado: Teens are more likely than adults to engage in risky behavior. They like to show off to their friends and believe that they will not get hurt.Speeding: In a survey, the majority of teens admitted to regularly driving ten miles over the speed limit. In fatal car crashes involving teenage drivers, 39 percent of male drivers and 24 percent of female drivers were speeding.Dangerous driving behaviors: Thirty-six percent of teen boys and forty-eight percent of teen girl admit to driving aggressively.Racing: Teenage boys are more susceptible to street racing, but that does not mean that teen girls are not at risk when they attend these races. Or worse, when they ride along.Drug and alcohol use: Underage drinking is a factor in 31 percent of teenage driving deaths. Twenty-five percent of teen drivers involved in accidents have blood alcohol concentrations of .08 or more.Seat belts: Only 77 percent of teens use a seatbelt regularly. This is the lowest rate of seatbelt use for any age group. More than 40 percent of teens who die in accidents are not wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.Peer pressure: Even responsible teens are likely to engage in unsafe behavior when pressured by their friends. Teenage passengers are unlikely to tell a teenage driver if they are concerned about safety. In fact, many teens say they would rather risk their lives by riding with an intoxicated driver than risk social rejection.Distractions: Most teenagers will readily cop to texting or talking on their cell phone while driving. However, cell phones aren’t the only teen driving distraction. Teenagers can also distracted by having friends in the car. A teenager with three passengers faces nearly three times the risk of a fatal wreck as a teen driving alone.Vehicle: Teens think affordability, not safety when purchasing cars. These cheaper and dated vehicles do not contain much of the modern safety features.Parents can help prevent teenage car accidents. Ride with your teen and look out for their bad driving habits. Make sure their car has working seat belts and that your child always buckles up. Set limits on the amount of friends that can ride with your child. Speak openly to your teens about the real risks of driving under the influence, and make sure your teen knows that you will always come and pick them up if they need a ride, no questions asked.Losing a child to a car accident is devastating. Monetary compensation can never make up for that loss, but it can help you get accountability. If your teenager has been seriously injured or killed in a car crash, consider speaking with a wrongful death attorney in West Palm Beach or where ever the accident occurred. Nothing can bring your child back, but getting accountability is a step in the right direction.Source: Free Articles from ArticlesFactory.com

Brake Repair: Discussing Vehicle Repairs with Your Teen

”;

A young driver should be aware of some of the major repairs that might be needed on a vehicle. Even if the child is not paying for the repairs, it is helpful that the young person knows what has gone wrong, or has a general idea of whether or not brake repair or some other repairs are needed. Knowing that something might be wrong might be a simple common sense, especially when you hear a loud squeaking sound whenever you press the brakes. The teen, however, might think that the problem is minor and try to ignore it, until the sound becomes unbearable. During this time, the problem might have been come a lot worse. Review some of the common problems that might occur so that the teen will inform you soon after the issues occur. Of course, some teens can complete their own minor repairs, but unless your family has the proper equipment to fix some of the major problems that could occur in a vehicle, it is best to let the experts complete them. You may not also want your teen to experiment on his or her own vehicle. Therefore, to the new driver irregular sounds and other indicators of problems with the vehicle might not seem important. A ride that is a bit bumpy can indicate that there is a problem with the tire, steering or the vehicle might need a brake repair job. The teen should be aware of a puling sensation while driving. You should also teach your teen how to react if there is a problem with the vehicle. Although your teen could have learned defensive driving techniques in school, he or she is likely to panic when the vehicle malfunctions on the road. Make sure that the teen knows not to try to fix the vehicle in the dark on the side of the road. Explain that even when he or she feels certain that other vehicles can see the stranded driver, most often they cannot see the person. Therefore, it is unsafe to try to fix even a simple problem outside while on the side of the road. Instill in your teen the need to be seen and get help. Consider providing tools that the need will need in case of an emergency. Perhaps you will offer a membership to an auto club, which can be helpful if the teen has a flat tire or some mechanical problem that might require towing. Having this safety net will give the teens a level of protection. The teen should have all of the phone numbers and other information nearby so that he or she could have the information in reach in case of an emergency. You should also make sure that the teen has information regarding his or her insurance coverage to use after an accident. When you have your own vehicle serviced, you can take your teen along and have him or her listen to your interaction with the mechanics. It will be helpful for your teen to know how to discuss a brake repair or other problems with the mechanic.

Talk To Your Teen

One of the hardest parts of life is growing up.  Teenagers are faced with decision-making, responsibility, and choices, everything adults have to face on a daily basis.  Life gets overwhelming at times and we all need someone to depend on.  Who better to depend on for support, then a parent?

I can remember when I was a teenager.  I played sports, had a lot of friends, but I also felt depressed at times, experimented with alcohol, and struggled to keep my grades up.  I had a hard time trusting people; I thought no one understood me.  I often wonder how different my teen years would have been like if I was reached out to more.  What if I was talked to and not at?

Communication is key in any relationship.  Talk to your teen about their day; ask them if they are having any frustrations with school or their friends.  Talk to them about drugs, alcohol and sexScience Articles, because those are issues they are faced with all the time.  Sharing your experiences as a teen with your child opens up a whole new world to them.  They now see you as someone who had to face the same things as they do.  It might make them think you DO understand.  Let them ask questions about how you dealt with certain situations as a teenager.  Nothing should be a forbidden topic.

Being a parent means guiding our children through life the best way we can.  The best way to do that is to communicate with them.  Talk TO your teen today!

Car Repair: How to Discuss Autos with Your Teen

”;

Your teen might be excited to have his or her first vehicle, but you need to be sure that the teen has all of the tools needed to be a successful vehicle owner. In addition to an emergency kit, you should teach the teen what to do in case there is trouble on the road. Some teens take courses in which they learn defensive driving strategies, but not all teens learn about proper vehicle maintenance. Teach your teen how to tell when the vehicle is not working properly. It might also be helpful to have your child accompany you during car repair trips for your vehicle. They can learn communication skills and get an idea of the cost associated with having various aspects of their vehicle repaired. Some teens might have had an auto care class in school. Some, however, know very little about how vehicles work. At the very least, your teen should understand that the vehicle should have regular oil changes. You can also discuss tune-ups and tire rotations with your teen. Remind your child to check his or her tires, because the pressure could change during weather changes. You should also remind them about being careful in driving in areas that could hurt their tires. Teens sometimes tend to drive in areas that could pose a risk to their tires. If they have a break-down, you should discuss safety both on the highway and on roadways. Remind the teen to have a cell phone with him or her at all times. Some vehicles have safety systems, which can be valuable to young drivers. As a parent, you will also feel relieved to know that the vehicle has a support system that they can use in case of an accident or road trouble. Consider giving the teen a membership in an auto club or insurance that offers roadside assistance. You never know if your child might need assistance the one time that you are not available to help. They might also be reluctant to call you after an accident. Making sure that the teen has access to roadside assistance can go a long way towards helping him or her stay safe on the road. You should also take the time to review information in the owner’s manual of his or her new vehicle. If you do not have an owner’s manual, you can likely find one online. Do not assume that your child knows how to care for the vehicle and how to seek car repair advice. When he or she gets a new vehicle, you might consider accompanying your teen to the car repair specialist and assisting with asking the proper questions, so he or she will develop skills to communicate with car repair professionals. This skill could go a long way to helping out with future dealings with mechanics. If your teen is paying for auto work herself, you might suggest that your child discuss the prices with you first. Particularly if you have a young son or daughter, you do not want the child to overpay for car repair services. Source: Free Articles from ArticlesFactory.com
